Yes, I think you were ahead of your time!

Per discussion with Lance, the WRT54GL is just an early version of 
the WRT54G, right?  But sold specifically to the Linux market.

Thanks for the links, looks like there's a good selection of high 
gain omnidirectional antennas.

Any guess what sort of range we could get with setup's like that?
