Clare,

Great!

I tinned the steel tape with silver soldering flux I bought at Ace Hdwe 
several months ago and regular rosin-core 60/40 (?) solder.  With the 
Weller gun it did the trick.  I put a sliver of cardboard between the 
hose clamps and the PVC when soldering in order to protect the PVC from 
the heat.

When I tried the antenna, I was able to key up the Tomah repeater with 
my HT from our deck at home near the Twin Bluffs Tavern--at 0.05 watts!  
The distance is just at 50 miles straight line.

I still need to correct the beam length and test the SWR.  Time...it's 
always about time.

Glad to hear that it went smoothly for you.  It was probably the easiest 
ham project I ever did!
