From sprinkies at excel.net Tue Feb 3 20:59:31 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Tue Feb 3 20:59:57 2009 Subject: [WARC] 144.240 net OFF next 3 Wed's unless others help Message-ID: <4BC72F03A6AA4C009C5BE9C366B48CE9@sprinkma35adeb> Hello all, Last Wed the 28th, I emailed various groups that I would be gone on Feb. 11th and Feb. 18th. Asked if anyone, or if a couple of people in different areas were willing to help spark some activity on 144.240 while I was gone. I haven't heard back from anyone, so I'll assume nobody's available or interested. Maybe someone will just make some noise when they realize I'm not around. That would do. Now I'm getting sicker by the hour this afternoon, so I'm already canceling 144.240 tomorrow, Feb. 4th. Whatever this is, it needs to be long gone by Monday, so I'm being extra careful. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 From sprinkies at excel.net Tue Feb 3 21:23:45 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Tue Feb 3 21:24:12 2009 Subject: [WARC] Plaque challenge winner is KC9JTL Message-ID: I've received over 10 logs from various SW WI, W-Cent. WI and far SE MN hams who participated in the ARRL Jan VHF Sweepstakes on Jan 17-18. Receiving at least 10 logs triggered my sponsoring a plaque for the highest score by a newcomer or little-gun station. W9HQ David and his son Christopher KC9JTL played as a limited multi-op, and they have won the plaque by scoring 1,060. Congratulations to both David and Christopher. Congratulations to everyone reading this who took the time to get on and hand out some points. It looks as though there were at least 25-30 calls in the EN43/EN44 area that contested. Here's the scores from those who submitted logs: KC9JTL -- 1060 KB9KTD -- 616 WV9S & son AB9HW -- 440 K9WKW -- 374 AB9TS -- 162 KC9ECI -- said he had about 15 Q's. KV9U -- reported about a dozen Q's. N9IGS -- sent log I couldn't open, but thanks for taking the time. W9RPM -- Not eligible for award. KC9BQA -- Not eligible for award. KA9FOX -- Not eligible for award. For those who are interested in the band-by-band breakdown... KC9JTL 6 meters -- 10 Q's in 3 grids 2 meters -- 33 Q's in 15 grids 70 cm -- 4 Q's in 1 grid 1.25 m -- 1 Q's in 1 grid I wish I could explain to you new contesters how exciting and unusual it is to have a dozen or more new ones on from a certain area. We had it in the SW WI/ W-Cent WI/ far SE MN area. We also had it in the Milwaukee area. But per capita, your area dominated with the new activity. I hope that if anyone has any questions about any aspect of the contest, you will ask via the list, or email me direct. The list would probably be better because almost undoubtedly, if you have a question, someone else has the same one. Either way, I just want you folks to get more comfortable, get better and know that you will be a whole lot warmer during the main summer VHF/UHF contesting season. Plan now to improve your antennas, their height and the antenna's elevation. Antennas are *everything* in VHF/UHF work. Congrats to KC9JTL Limited Multi-op, and thanks to everyone else for making this a real party. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 From sprinkies at excel.net Mon Feb 9 10:02:18 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Mon Feb 9 10:02:47 2009 Subject: [WARC] Interesting post-contest reading Message-ID: VHF Contesters all across the USA send in their stories with pictures to this link: http://www.arrl.org/contests/soapbox/ You do not have to be an ARRL member to enjoy this. It's open to anyone. If you select 2009 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes, you can view at least 3 pages worth of write-ups. Of note on the 1st page is the write-up from Badger Contesters very own KB9C/R. This is Bruce, W9FZ. There's lots of pictures you can click on, and plenty of write-ups from both big guns and little ones. Fixed stations, multi-ops and rovers, as well. You can definitely learn more about contesting by reading these Soapbox stories. If you care to read about other past contests, here's the ones you want from the drop-down menu. Anything with "Sept VHF QSO party", "UHF Contest", and "June VHF QSO party" are the contests to concern yourself with. Enjoy! 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 PS: I will resume the 144.240 net on Feb. 25th. Until then, hope you folks can get together and keep the party going. Message-ID: <499636CD.2080608@acegroup.cc> Hello All, Russ and I are considering making a trip to the 835 site tomorrow morning to see if we can diagnose the repeater problem(s) and make a fix. We also would probably do some tower climbing to examine the feed line. Can anyone else go with us? We could use some knowledgeable and experienced help. If we go, we would probably meet at Ace Hdwe about 10:00 or 10:30 AM. Russ says he has TWO Jeeps available so that a large group could go. Please let me know if you might be able to help. I plan to attend breakfast in the morning (McDonalds west) and will be monitoring 146.640 while in Winona. We found ice in the feed line-to-lightning arrestor connectors. This condition seems to be a repeat of a problem of moisture in the feed line observed several times in the past two years. As a result, the repeater is out of operation for awhile. We brought the Polyphasor lightning arrestor down from the repeater site to properly dry and clean it. We also routed the feed line from the base of the tower to the floor of the shack so that it has a continual downward grade toward the end connector. The objective is to encourage moisture which might be in the feed line (in the normal droop between the tower and shack entrance) to thaw and drain out the end of the line. Russ examined the feed line all the way up the tower and found no visible fault in the feed line jacket. The repair to the jacket performed previously seemed to be intact, but the patch was removed and new splicing tape and liquid electrical tape applied. Another small "dent" in the jacket which did not appear to represent a failure in jacket integrity was coated with liquid electrical tape. The antenna-to-feed line connections at the top of the tower appeared to be protected from the weather and sound. No timetable for bringing the repeater back up has been set, but it is thought that the repeater will be out of operation for up a couple of weeks while the feed line thaws and moisture has an opportunity to drain. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. A more detailed report will be posted on the repeater changelog on the club wiki. 73, Len From ewbrom at hbci.com Sun Feb 15 00:26:34 2009 From: ewbrom at hbci.com (Erik Brom) Date: Sun Feb 15 00:26:51 2009 Subject: [WARC] 146.835 Repeater Is Down for the Time Being In-Reply-To: <4997406D.1030203@acegroup.cc> References: <4997406D.1030203@acegroup.cc> Message-ID: <20090215002646.0CCF01B6F4@mail.hbci.com> Thanks for doing that guys! I hope some folks kept 144.240 warm in the meantime. We're back at it starting Wed. night at 7:15pm. I'm going to stick to a 7:15 start so we can have a more relaxed pace. With increasing numbers of check-ins, I want enough time to make sure I find everyone who is trying. At 7:15pm, I will start out looking to my SSW, toward Rockford, Peoria and St. Louis areas. I will slowly edge my beams clockwise, calling "CQ Activity Net" frequently. I will stop when I'm looking due north, toward NE WI, and the U.P. of MI. The exclusion of the Milwaukee/Chicago areas is deliberate -- they are welcome to check into the 144.250 net at 8:30pm on Wed's. We should keep using the following website to keep track of who's checked in and who's trying: http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html You can "raise your hand" here, and also keep track of who all's on board, so you can target stations to talk with after the net is done. If you can think of anyone else who would enjoy knowing about this net, please put them in touch with me, and I'll add them to the email list.
