From sprinkies at excel.net Wed Jul 1 04:05:57 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Wed Jul 1 04:06:26 2009 Subject: [WARC] Made some website updates today Message-ID: Good evening, Made several new posts to http://www.kc9bqa.com today. 1) The 2 meter SSB and FM nets are *ON* as usual. 2) I promote the VHF/UHF club I belong to, the Badger Contesters. Almost everyone in the La Crosse and Winona areas is within BC territory, and we'd love to have you join. Please read the website post for full details. 3) I promote the upcoming CQ WW VHF Contest. 6 and 2 meters only -- July 18-19th. In some ways, I consider this the most fun V/UHF contest there is, plus it tends to be pretty friendly to the more modest stations, or the newer contester. See if you can personally encourage someone you know who has 6 and/or 2 meters to get on the air and give this one a try! Anyone who has plans to try a rover operation, this is your contest. Only 2 bands to worry about, and the best weather of the year. Plus the real possibility of having a good opening on 6 meters. If you do end up trying a rove, PLEASE announce your plans as much as possible, so other rovers and fixed stations will know to look your way. If you have 5-10 minutes, please visit the website and get fired up about the July CQ WW VHF Contest. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From kf0q at hbci.com Wed Jul 1 16:53:17 2009 From: kf0q at hbci.com (kf0q@hbci.com) Date: Wed Jul 1 16:53:19 2009 Subject: [WARC] Field Day 2009 Soapbox input requested Message-ID: <20090701115317.202558uebqrohqil@mail.hbci.com> Last year I requested and received some great comments about the club?s Field Day experience. Once again it would be great to hear from you about this year?s experience hoping that we could include your comments in the July Hamgram. If you havent done so yet there is a little time left to get your comments to me and still make this months issue of the Hamgram. For those of you not familiar with the Soapbox it is merely your thoughts or impressions of the event typically in couple of lines or less of what you enjoyed about the event. The ARRL web page at: http://www.arrl.org/contests/soapbox/ has many great examples of the Soapbox relating to many operating events and contests for the last several years. Examples of comments you may wish to include could range from the thrill of working some particular station, hearing one of your friends callsigns on the air from across the country, to comments about how well your antenna worked etc etc. I think it would be great to hear about the event from your perspective and share with the other folks that missed your shift or the event entirely. It would be really nice to hear from those of you new to Field Day or have been licensed less than five years as I know there were a good number of you at the site this year. Just send your comments to me directly and I will forward the completed list to Les for publication. The club again has reserved the special event call sign N2B for the station. The location this year will be the Winona Knitting Mills picnic pavilion on the northwest corner of their property (best access is via Front Street). This is a large, well-maintained, clean pavilion with plenty of picnic tables under cover and 120 volt power supply. Operating hours will be from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM local time both days. The rig, power supply, antenna, log sheets, and other items are coming together satisfactorily at this stage. What we need now is operators. If you can help with set-up or operating, please let me know what times you can help. Here is the general schedule. I am suggesting two-hour shifts for operators, but you can operate more if you like. Friday, July 17. Time TBD. - Set up the club G5RV antenna. Make sure your 2 meter rigs and antennas are working FB and getting out, in advance of the upcoming contests. 144.240 at 7:15-8:15pm is probably your best option. With the 144.240 net I like to use this page to give real-time updates: http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html Feel free to "raise your hand" there or to QSY with other net stations to get more contacts in your log. The difference between the early 144.240 and later 144.250 net is this: 144.240 *specifically* targets areas to my SW, W, NW and N. I don't look toward Milwaukee/Chicago or to my east with the 144.240 net. The 144.250 net has most of its check-ins from the MKE/CHI area, but I do look a full 360, anyway, just in case. Looking very forward to the July CQ WW VHF Contest next weekend -- July 18/19. This one is 6 and 2 meters only, and very enjoyable. Also looking forward to the Aug UHF on Aug 1-2. I will be opping most of both contests. Hope to work many of you, as time permits. http://www.cqww-vhf.com/rules.htm http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2009/uhf.html Keep up with the Badger Contesters reflector, if you don't already. There should be significant rover activity in N WI and perhaps into the UP of MI. N9WU, K9JCZ and WD9EXD have all emailed to say that they plan on activating various NC and NE WI grids on July 18-19. Or you can always tune into http://www.kc9bqa.com If it's about V/UHF within a few hundred miles of Wisconsin, I'm talking about it there. All about nets, improving activity and contesting on VHF/UHF. If you like short emails, know that everything about your 144 and 146 MHz weekly nets is explained in a post I just made to http://www.kc9bqa.com 144.240 at 7:15-8:15pm is probably your best option. With the 144.240 net I like to use this page to give real-time updates: http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html Feel free to "raise your hand" there or to QSY with other net stations to get more contacts in your log. Great news that KC9ECI Tom is going to op from way up high on Decorah Peak in EN44 this weekend. That should help fire up you La Crosse/Winona guys. Who else is going to be on for the CQ WorldWide VHF Contest, this weekend, 6 and 2 meters only? Let's get a little rah-rah going here on the list. Also looking forward to the Aug UHF on Aug 1-2. I will be playing in most of both contests. Hope to work many of you, as time permits. http://www.cqww-vhf.com/rules.htm http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2009/uhf.html In addition to KC9ECI being high up in EN44, there are other exciting things going on this weekend on 6 and 2m SSB. Significant rover activity in N WI and perhaps into the UP of MI. N9WU, K9JCZ and WD9EXD have all emailed to say that they plan on activating various NC and NE WI grids on July 18-19. K9CT and N9LR will be portable from EN67, starting on Friday, with good beams for 6 and 2, up high + QRO from an outstanding location. There will also be the loudest signal ever on 6 and 2 from Madison, EN53. NR9R Anthony will be using the BARS station on the UW campus, where the yagis are up at the 250' level. Make a note of these times please: 9-11pm on Sat. July 17th and 6-8am Sun. July 18th. Those will be activity periods for stirring up more action on the FM side during the contest. Promote those times to "ordinary" hams, and encourage them to try doing a VHF contest with Whatever They Have. 52.525 MHz on 6, and 146.550-146.580 MHz on 2. Use 146.400-146.490 if it gets very busy. This idea of including the FM-only stations worked out very well back in January, so let's keep moving forward with it. There's a more detailed post on the website dated July 12th, explaining the full reasoning behind having FM activity periods in V/UHF contests. If it's about V/UHF within a few hundred miles of Wisconsin, I'm talking about it at www.kc9bqa.com . Bread-and-butter VHF bands that most every ham has. Enjoy active ham bands? Of course you do. Well in a V/UHF contest, you will hear plenty of activity. It's the best time to have fun. http://www.cqww-vhf.com/rules.htm Yes, the majority of contest ops take place with SSB mode and horizontal pol. antennas. You get superior range that way, and it's where you want to end up if you get serious. BUT... anyone with 2 or 6m can try a VHF contest, no problem. My website post dated July 12th addresses that. Talking http://www.kc9bqa.com Everybody has to start somewhere and this weekend is an excellent time for that. For this contest, I want you to come out and support the FM activity period of 9-11pm tonight and 7-9am tomorrow. Chose those times for several good reasons, those are detailed on http://www.kc9bqa.com in a post dated July 11th. FM freqs. to use are 146.550-146.580 primary on 2m. Spread out to 146.400-146.490 if it gets busy. Turn squelch down, use headphones if you really want to capture the weak ones. On 6m, use 52.525 or nearby if it's busy. Of course, help support KC9ECI Tom who has climbed up to the top of Decorah Peak in EN44. Anyone who goes to that length deserves hundreds of Q's! Good job Tom, good luck. Click here for a basic overview : http://kc9bqa.com/?p=577 This QST goes out to about 13 different groups within a few hundred miles. Probably catches the eye of at least 1000-1500 different hams, if they choose to pay attention. The La Crosse and Winona areas have lost interest in the nets now for some months. There was great LSE interest in 144 SSB last fall and winter, and now I hear from very few. I don't even get email suggesting why the interest fell off, so I have nothing to go on. I miss you guys, but more importantly, I don't want you giving up on VHF/UHF. I suspect that a stronger, more local signal would do the trick. There are at least a dozen or more of you reading this who have an interest in SSB ops, plus the equipment to enjoy it now. Some vertical antennas, some horizontal, but there's plenty of interest. Not every area has that interest, so don't take it for granted. It does not take a genius to run a net -- trust me, LOL. You also do not have to "market" it as rabidly as I do. It can be casual, and a few ops can share the responsibility. You can shape it however you want, but it does work best if you are consistent and enthusiastic. If someone or a few of you took the lead on this, and at least talked it up within a 50-100 mile radius, I bet you'd average 6-10 check-ins each week. A local net would also allow vertical polarization stations to hear some of the activity. Finally, I will share this food for thought with the list. *** Consider doing a net from a portable location *** Have net control drive up to a blufftop/ridgetop location and call a net for an hour or so. You'd get huge coverage and it would be a novelty. Things like that really get hams to come out of the woodwork and get involved. The weather will be nice into Sept./ Oct., so there'd be plenty of time to get this up and running. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com From Litvan at acegroup.cc Fri Jul 24 01:01:20 2009 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Fri Jul 24 01:01:32 2009 Subject: [WARC] Weekend On Wheels - Hams Needed Message-ID: <4A6907E0.8050602@acegroup.cc> Hello all, Next weekend, July 31-Aug 2, is Weekend on Wheels in Winona. I start looking toward IL/MO about 7:15 on 144.240, and slowly swing my yagis clockwise. Typically get to La Crosse/Winona areas about 7:30-7:45. I always clearly announce I'm looking at La Crosse so you don't need to worry about being passed over. I typically am ragchewing a bit with some Iowa stations first, so if you're hearing bits and pieces of that, you know I'm getting close. Also remember that all my nets are announced yea or nay on http://www.kc9bqa.com. A few minutes a week there really keeps you up to speed. Message-ID: <200907301702.n6UH2pGn013046@green.excel.net> Hello, 2 meter SSB got *VERY* interesting last night. It opened up to parts of New England and the Mid-Atlantic via sporadic E skip (the same propagation mode that is common with 6m openings in the summertime). Now there's maybe 1-4 sporadic E openings on 144 per summer. They're at least 20-30 times rarer than 6m openings, so when you're at the rig and you hear a neighbor calling a Connecticut station on 144.200 MHz, it really gets the heart racing. A lot of 2 meter E skip openings are weak and short-lived. This one was better than average. Lots of guys in various states worked 5, 10, 20-30 contacts in different states, between about 5pm and 7pm. There very well may have been E skip on the 146-147 MHz range, too. In fact, there undoubtedly was -- I was just too preoccupied with 144.200 SSB. Anyone care to share some stories from last night? Did you fellows hear skip on the simplex channels, or any repeaters skip in? I'd enjoy hearing about it, and I bet the guys on the list would too. For my part, I worked 4 stations in Virginia between 6:08-6:18pm. On 144.180 MHz. I know others in WI and MN got in on it, too. Just not sure if the hams on the FM side heard anything unusual. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From Litvan at acegroup.cc Thu Jul 30 20:32:35 2009 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Thu Jul 30 20:32:42 2009 Subject: [WARC] Weekend On Wheels General Operational Guidelines Message-ID: <4A720363.40303@acegroup.cc> *Weekend on Wheels 2009 - Amateur Radio Guidelines* _Purpose_: To provide communications for SAG support including calling = out SAG vehicles to areas needed. _General operation_: This will involve operation of 2-meter mobile = stations in ham's own vehicles along the various routes each day and = operation of a base station at WSU for overall coordination and = control.
