June 13th and running until 10pm on June 14th. Back in January, I wrote a series of articles called VHF Contesting School. These were designed to get new and intermediate contesters up to speed. This morning, I've updated my website http://www.kc9bqa.com with those articles, as well as updates of local and regional activity we can expect next weekend. Please pass this info along to anyone who is into VHF/UHF or contest curious. Of specific interest to La Crosse/Winona area hams is the large multi-op effort from EN34, up on Buck Hill, just SW of Minneapolis. This is going to draw a lot of RF on multiple bands right thru your region. May as well get on the air and see who you can work. Of course, NLRS will have several rovers out and about, per usual. All the grids surrounding the Twin Cities will be represented. If you have plans to operate, I'd enjoy a personal note letting me know that what I'm doing makes a difference. Do know that I will be on lots next weekend, and looking your way often. Also look forward to hearing from any/all of you on the Wed. night SSB 2 meter nets. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From lhittner at hbci.com Mon Jun 8 10:57:42 2009 From: lhittner at hbci.com (Leslie Hittner) Date: Mon Jun 8 10:57:56 2009 Subject: [WARC] Trinona Triathlon References: <20090605182740.ZQMM3375.ispmxaamta05-gx.windstream.net@COM> Message-ID: At the last minute, we have been asked by the organizers of the Trinona = Triathlon to provide communications support along portions of the bicycle = route. Most of it is geared toward newcomers, but honestly, it probably will make most anyone who enjoys contesting think a little bit. Especially about becoming more aware of who's around you in a several-hundred mile radius. There are new rover plans already posted, (W9FZ in WI and N0IRS in Iowa) and I fully expect to post more later tonight or tomorrow morning, because I know we've yet to hear from a variety of rovers. Check the website for updates, right up until about noon tomorrow. If it helps someone connect with a rover they didn't know about, or gets you dialed into a new grid, it's all worth it. Everyone have a great contest, and remember to look east. Lots going on in N and E WI, as well as NW and W Lower MI. (EN55 activation, plus EN75 multi-op from an island in Lake MI and KF8QL/R doing EN74/64/73/63/72/62) It's all detailed in the posts I made today. Again, there will undoubtedly be more posts about the specific WI/ILL forecast as I hear more rover plans tonight/tomorrow. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From lhittner at hbci.com Sat Jun 13 12:11:36 2009 From: lhittner at hbci.com (Leslie Hittner) Date: Sat Jun 13 12:11:43 2009 Subject: [WARC] IMPORTANT Trinona Communications Support Message-ID: Skipped content of type multipart/alternative-------------- next part -----= --------- Skipped content of type multipart/alternative From lhittner at hbci.com Sun Jun 14 21:58:15 2009 From: lhittner at hbci.com (Leslie Hittner) Date: Sun Jun 14 21:58:29 2009 Subject: [WARC] Trinona Message-ID: <50584487F2954AA28DD58B9ACEC532E7@Europa> Skipped content of type multipart/alternative-------------- next part -----= --------- Skipped content of type multipart/alternative From Litvan at acegroup.cc Mon Jun 15 01:17:26 2009 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Mon Jun 15 01:17:23 2009 Subject: [WARC] Trinona In-Reply-To: <50584487F2954AA28DD58B9ACEC532E7@Europa> References: <50584487F2954AA28DD58B9ACEC532E7@Europa> Message-ID: <4A35A126.2030804@acegroup.cc> Thanks, Les for the good update. They were very complimentary regarding the club's response. This was a BIG event, with 352 participants and followers. It was extremely well organized--especially for a "first annual". My highest score by far in a June contest, with several strong Eskip openings on 6m. I hope some of you enjoyed it -- it's a different kind of contest when 6m is open much of the time. The local stuff takes a backseat to hams working all across the US, VE, XE and the Caribbean on 6. After 6 closed down (it usually does by late evening, but not always), we had decent propagation on 2 meters and higher bands toward dark and overnight into early morning Sunday. Those were good times to try those 100-300 mile paths on the SSB side of 2m, 1.25cm and 70cm. I wrote a long contest summary yesterday and that's up at http://www.kc9bqa.com. Also, the 144.240 SSB net is on tonight (Wed.) at 7:15pm. Everyone is welcome to listen along or say hello. I plan on also having the 146.43 FM net Thur. night at 8:30pm, per usual. But with T-storms forecast for Thur-Friday, it's a good idea to check the website in case I need to call off the net. I always announce the nets yea or nay on the website, so nobody's left hanging. If any of you have questions or comments about the contest, feel free to email and I'll try to listen or help. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From Litvan at acegroup.cc Wed Jun 17 21:46:03 2009 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Wed Jun 17 21:46:07 2009 Subject: [WARC] Field Day Antenna Mast - Help Needed Message-ID: <4A39641B.1090606@acegroup.cc> Clare K0NY has suggested that we use sections of the club tower to suspend the G5RV antenna on field day. We need a couple of volunteers to check out the sections, attaching bolts, guy lines, and anchors. See below info from Clare. WHO CAN HELP WITH THIS PROJECT--make sure all the antenna sections, connectors, and guy system are good to go? The tower sections are at Clare's residence. Later, we will need someone to help get the materials to the field day site. Sincerely, Len KC0RSX The G5RV only needs to go up 25 to 30 feet. Use one straight section and one tapered section (Has a rotor in it). If I remember I will mark with surveyors flagging. Use high grade fine thread machine screens. You may need to get them at Fastenal with lock washers. The tower sections are under the tree. You will need about 150 feet of rope for three guy lines. We have anchors in the club box. Every net is announced yea or nay, on the website. Every Thursday at 8:30pm we have the 146.43 FM simplex net over here. I am omni only (vertical pol on FM) but up 90'. We have had the occasional check in from Dubuque or Wauzeka, so don't automatically write off the FM net. As with all my nets, I love DX check-ins, so light signals are welcome. If you have a vertical beam, point it toward southern Sheboygan county. Every net also generates a net report, where you can see who all checked in, their QTH, signal strength, etc. I just got thru posting those net reports from last night on: http://www.kc9bqa.com Last night's SSB net was highlighted by our first-ever Upper Michigan check-ins, from rare grid square EN65. I talk about this on the posts I just made at the website. Lots of fun last night with the exciting DX check-ins. There's also a forecast for enhanced tropo conditions off and on the next 4-5 days. Peak times for longer-range contacts on 2 meters and up would tend to be later in the evening thru early in the morning. I have provided a link to those forecasts, and an explanation on the website. Message-ID: <4A43D9C6.8070807@acegroup.cc> This Saturday and Sunday are Field Day 2009. You are invited to participate and have some FUN! The location is the Winona Sportsmen's Club (link to map at www.w0ne.org ). Main station operating hours will be 1:00 PM Saturday to 1:00 PM Sunday. The club will operate in the 2A class again this year--maximum of two HF rigs at a time plus an additional VHF/UHF station. Call sign: W0NE. Exchange: 2 Alpha Minnesota. If there are people available to operate, there will also be a GOTA station--maybe solar powered. There is also some preliminary discussion in progress to sked a 10 GHz demo in the evening. Set-up will begin mid-morning Saturday. There will be at least four antennas to put up--two Butternut verticals, a G5RV with 35 ft. tower, and a VHF antenna. If we put up a Get-On-The-Air station, there will be another wire antenna to erect. The Winona County Sheriff's Department is providing their emergency communications trailer again, and it will most likely house the two main HF rigs and the VHF rig. Russ N0QK has provided his mini-camper trailer for a an operating location for the the GOTA station or for personal stations if someone is interested. I hope to head up to the site right after the club breakfast Saturday morning (MacDonalds West). I'm going to take a sack lunch. We will probably get pizza from Winona for Saturday supper again. A pancake breakfast will be prepared at the site on Sunday morning. The operating schedule sign-ups as of now is below. More ops can be accommodated, obviously--especially during the nighttime hours. I was moving this weekend, so I didn't get as much of a chance to participate as I would have liked. But I did spend an enjoyable hour at the site and was pleased to see three nice stations (HF CW, VHF, HF phone) and get a chance to operate on 6M. 6M was open to TX, LA, MS, and FL. The station went up well. We ran two HF rigs and one VHF rig. Antennas included two vertical HF Butternuts, the new club G5RV up 35 feet on the club mast, and Matt's VHF 6-meter/2-meter beam. Power cords went more smoothly this year with the benefit of Power Poles being observed in at least one case. Three PCs were networked for real-time logging. We gave the Winona County Emergency Communications trailer a good workout. The new generator is QUIET! Thanks to Russ also for the use of the camper trailer which was used as the base of the VHF beams in addition to being available as an operating point. There was a 10 GHz contact of over 100 miles Saturday evening. That was cool. We had at least one QSO to Alaska with the G5RV (although some felt that the antenna had mixed reviews). While I haven't heard a QSO count yet, it appears that we had fifteen ops including three who gained their General Class licenses only last autumn. They all reported that they had a blast. We had a number of guests--mostly family of ops. The hot pancake breakfast provided by Lance on Sunday morning tasted especially good. Thanks to everyone who helped--both at the site and off-site--for making this year's field day a fun and educational event. I hope to post some pics to the club website soon. Copies of receipts where appropriate would be good. Please try to submit them within a reasonable time frame--perhaps by the next club program, the July club picnic.
