The location is the Bluffview Montessori School, 1321 Gilmore Avenue, Winona, MN. Talk-in on 146.640 (no tone). Tests will be offered for all classes of license: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. Walk-ins are encouraged. The fee for license testing is $14.00 and is payable in cash or check at the time of testing. The fee covers the session and allows testing for all three classes of license if a person wishes to test for more than one class. License tests must be passed in sequence--Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. If a test is failed, a retest at the same session will require an additional $14.00 fee. Persons interested in taking tests must bring two forms of identification including one photo ID, their Social Security number, and appropriate fees. Persons seeking upgrades must also bring their ORIGINAL FCC license and a copy of the license or a CSCE for tests recently passed. An electronic calculator with functions such as square, square root, log/anti-log, and trigonometric functions is permitted. Any memories on such calculators must be demonstrated to be "empty" at the beginning of the test. Good luck to those participating in the tests. 73, Len KC0RSX From Litvan at acegroup.cc Sun Mar 1 23:05:52 2009 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Sun Mar 1 23:05:58 2009 Subject: [WARC] Ham Radio License Manual - Club Property Message-ID: <49AB14D0.5060809@acegroup.cc> There is a copy of the current Technician Class study guide, "The Ham Radio License Manual", owned by WARC and available for appropriate use. With increasing numbers of check-ins, I want enough time to make sure I find everyone who is trying. At 7:15pm, I will start out looking to my SSW, toward Rockford, Peoria and St. Louis areas. I will slowly edge my beams clockwise, calling "CQ Activity Net" frequently. I will stop when I'm looking due north, toward NE WI, and the U.P. of MI. The exclusion of the Milwaukee/Chicago areas is deliberate -- they are welcome to check into the 144.250 net at 8:30pm on Wed's. We should keep using the following website to keep track of who's checked in and who's trying: http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html You can "raise your hand" here, and also keep track of who all's on board, so you can target stations to talk with after the net is done. If you can think of anyone else who would enjoy knowing about this net, please put them in touch with me, and I'll add them to the email list. Feel absolutely free to spread the word to other 2 meter hams. Our sole purpose is to encourage activity on lesser-used portions of 2 meters. As always, any questions or comments, just email. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 From sprinkies at excel.net Thu Mar 5 14:17:44 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Thu Mar 5 14:18:12 2009 Subject: [WARC] 144.240 net --11 check-ins + 1st EN22 ever! Message-ID: You guys to my SW, please note the new start time of 7:15pm. Lots of guys felt like getting on and playing radio last night, even though cx's were so-so. We had 11 check-ins to 144.240, and if it hadn't been Club Meeting night in La Crosse, we would have had a few others. If it stays busy like this, that's great. Also know that it may mean I don't look toward Twin Cities or EN37 until 7:50-8pm. I will try to post to http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html as I progress. Also had 20 check-ins to the Badger net on 144.250, at 8:30, so yes, it was a busy radio night. Last night, we had: WA9JML -- Steve -- EN51 De Kalb, IL S5-7 N0IRS -- JD -- EM29 K.City, MO S1 KC9CSQ -- Larry -- EN42 Platteville, WI S1 KA0PQW -- Matt -- EN33 Ellendale, MN S5 KC0LXB -- Charles -- EN34 LeCenter, MN S1 WB0VAK -- Dave -- EN33 Owatonna, MN S0 Dave was relayed by KA0PQW. If he gets more than 10 watts, I'm going to hear him Q5, easily. Thanks for trying, Dave, and thanks for relaying, Matt. WB0YWW -- Bob -- EN22 Moorland, IA S5 peaks * Here's tonight's DX-award winner, folks. Never had an EN22 check into the net, and honestly, this may be my first EN22 on 2 meters ever. Bob said he had 19 els, and 150 watts and once we peaked up on each other, we could have gabbed for a half hour. I'm always wondering how to get more Iowa guys involved, so this was a big treat for me* WB9LYH -- Mark -- EN54 Rudolph, WI 20 over Mark's homebrew amp project is working. He's now got 400 watts on 2 meters if necessary, and he had a good signal to start with. Always keep an ear out for Mark; he likes to contact the distant ones after the net is done. K0SIX -- Vince -- EN35 Big Bear Lake, MN S0 KB0CIM -- Jim -- EN37 Cohasset, MN S0 KC0KVD -- John -- EN37 Bovey, MN S0 I asked WB9LYH to call toward EN37 with those 400 watts, and he found 'CIM and 'KVD. I heard bits and pieces of Jim, but just like last week, John only once. Good to know they got included, anyway. Also want to thank Vince K0SIX for telling WB0YWW about our net. As well as thank anyone else who's ever helped promote the net. It's all about throwing more pebbles in the RF pond, and watching the little ripples move outward. The more RF, the more ripples and eventually, those ripples bump into each other and you get fun things like EN22 in your log. Any questions or comments, just email. All are welcome and encouraged to check-in for as little or as long as you like. The purpose of the net is to create activity on 2m SSB. You can help by spreading the word to others. Remember that I start out at 7:15pm by looking to my SSW, thru Rockford, Peoria and toward St. Louis. I then slowly edge my beams clockwise, calling "CQ Activity Net" frequently. How soon I start looking SW, or W, or NW depends on how many check-ins I'm getting. With this net, I only look from my SSW to my due North. The exclusion of the Milwaukee and Chicago areas is deliberate. I'm really trying to find weak ones in outstate WI and IL, plus all of MO, IA, MN and U.P. of MI. Milwaukee and Chicago areas get their chance with the 144.250 Badger Contesters net at 8:30pm on Wed. Everyone getting this email is also welcome to check in to the 144.250 net. I look a full 360 degrees with that one. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 (bands I have) From sprinkies at excel.net Thu Mar 19 12:39:48 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Thu Mar 19 12:40:15 2009 Subject: [WARC] 144.240 SSB net report -- 8 check-ins Message-ID: Band was so-so last night, and I'm sorry to report that I had pretty bad noise issues. S5 at times, and mostly to the SW thru WSW. It's been 6 or 7 weeks since the noise issue last popped up -- oh well. I'm fairly certain I missed at least one or two light stations, so if I did, thanks anyway for trying to check in. Here's who we had: WB0YWW -- Bob -- EN22 S3 N0TTW -- Chris -- EN32 S1 W9HQ -- David -- EN43 S3 KC9JTL -- Christopher -- EN43 (W9HQ's son) KA0PQW -- Matt -- EN33 S7 peaks KV9U -- Rick -- EN43 S5 KC0LXB -- Charles -- EN34 S1 K0SIX -- Vince -- EN35 S1 It was good to hear WB0YWW in there again from just SW of Fort Dodge, IA. He must hear well, because he was calling me while I was still pointing my beam toward the Quad Cities. I just couldn't quite make out thru the noise who the station was. Noise really irritates me, heheh. Even with the noise and the marginal band conditions, KA0PQW came up to a good S7 for a short time. Then he was back down to S1 or S2. Looking forward to next week. Oh yes... the Spring Sprints for VHF/UHF are soon! The first one is April 6th, Monday night, 7-11pm local time. It's for 2 meters. Many of you may have worked K9JK John as he roves during the contests. Well John is now co-host of the Spring Sprints, and I'm happy to help him spread the word. Save some time to get on 2 meters on Mon., April 6th, between 7-11pm. For more info, K9JK has created the following webpage: http://groups.google.com/group/springsprints/web Any questions or comments, just email, 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 From sprinkies at excel.net Fri Mar 20 13:40:39 2009 From: sprinkies at excel.net (Todd Sprinkmann) Date: Fri Mar 20 13:41:08 2009 Subject: [WARC] KC9BQA does FM simplex nets, too. Message-ID: <63408F2F1B914CE4A4F30F0D988F723D@sprinkma35adeb> Good morning, West Coasters (LOL) It just occurred to me last night that you SW WI/ SE MN hams should have your own 2 meter net. Please read on. You're used to hearing from me about SSB nets. Well, I also run an FM net on Thursdays. 146.43 simplex @8:30pm. Gets good participation within about 50-75 miles of my QTH. I'm much stronger on SSB because of yagis up high, but I suppose there's a chance someone with a beam could make the path across WI. Dan KB9RYJ from Wauzeka has, twice. So go right ahead and surprise me! You know how I love DX and weak ones. The real reason I'm writing though, is to suggest that you folks start your own FM net. When I first started the nets, I was only doing them on SSB, because that's what 90% of my antennas and rigs are for. After about a month, I realized that if I wanted to reach the largest number of hams, I needed to cross over to FM simplex, and meet the repeater guys halfway. Am I glad I made that move! I get just as many check-ins to FM nets as I do SSB. Talking 10-15 on an average week. At least 100 unique calls in the past 7 months. Very worthwhile. A fair amount have now tried SSB on 2 meters, and/or enjoyed a bit of contesting, too. There's usually ragchewing after the net -- and sometimes spread out among several simplex frequencies. So I feel very good about helping to increase on-air activity. The La Crosse area remains my single best area (besides metro Milwaukee -- in my backyard) for check-ins to the SSB nets. What you all did in that January contest for getting 15-20 different stations on was amazing. You folks could easily support your own net. Perhaps FM would be best for starters. It would include the most people, and I'm sure with the weather warming up, you'd be starting things up at the best possible time of the year. I wonder if there's anyone or better yet, a few people who would be interested in starting up a net. You could really capitalize on the recent surge in interest. If you email and publicize it on the air faithfully, you'll be amazed at how many hams come out of the woodwork and check in. Don't mean to derail the current discussion, but it just seems so natural to me that your area should have its own net... 73, thanks for the bandwidth, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee 50 thru 2304 From steve at winonawebs.com Sun Mar 22 23:51:37 2009 From: steve at winonawebs.com (Steve) Date: Sun Mar 22 23:52:39 2009 Subject: [WARC] free Terk TV50 antenna Message-ID: <49C6CF09.9040400@winonawebs.com> I have a Terk TV-50 indoor/outdoor dipole-type antenna that needs a new = home. Those of you who care to, continue to use that Vhf QSO page for coordination and updates. It's not a requirement, just a potential aid. http://dxworld.com/vhfqso.html I will start out by looking SSW toward Rockford, Peoria and St. Louis on 144.240, at 7:15pm. I will then slowly edge my beams clockwise, calling "CQ Activity Net", looking for check-ins. I stop when I get to my due north. So I'm looking for all parts of MO, IA, MN and always the Dakotas and NE if propagation allows. Also look for the portions of ILL and WI that *aren't* in the Chicago or Milwaukee area. It is updated daily at 5:00AM and updated periodically during the day during dynamic events, so it pays to check it during the course of the day. - On the these outlooks, if you are in an area indicated as High or Moderate, be prepared to deploy. Steve said that good rule of thumb is that if an event is within two counties of your location, plan for and think seriously about deploying. Winona County Emergency Management Office will call the official deployments. As a matter of policy, they will not call spotters out at night because of spotter safety risks. June is the most active month for severe storms and tornadoes in the NWS La Crosse area of responsibility, followed closely by July and May. The most serious threat in Winona County is flash flooding. The county as a unique position in MN in that it leads all counties in flash flood events. Winona County Emergency Management prefers amateurs to report severe weather observations by radio if possible. Otherwise, the phone number to use is (507) 457-6351. There is a new criteria for reporting hail--one inch diameter (the size of a quarter) or larger. Bob Bilder reported that here will be a tornado event simulation on April 23 this year. No further information was passed on. Sincerely & 73, Len KC0RSX
