Message-ID: I want to congratulate WV9E Dave for taking the initiative to get another FM Simplex net going. Remember that he starts up tomorrow night (Thursday, Mar 4th) on 146.460, at 8:30pm. I email in 18-20 different directions with my promoting VHF/UHF across the Midwest/Great Lakes (don't believe me? Go visit my website for a fresh post I just made) My point is this: Out of all these groups, the La Crosse area has had the best success on VHF the past 2 years. So it's only natural that you guys/gals should have your own net. Support WV9E on 146.46 FM simplex tomorrow night. On Wednesdays, know that we have the SSB nets. WB9LYH in EN54 (Wood County) is super strong and I heard two weeks ago, someone was working him with an antenna at 8' off the ground. Hope to hear some of you in conjunction with the 144.240 SSB net tonight. It starts at 7pm, but WB9LYH isn't really pointing his antennas toward LSE until about 7:45-8pm. If you want a clearer idea of what WB9LYH is doing, and how we're trying to improve VHF/UHF across all of the Midwest, please visit the website for my Mar 2nd update. 73, Todd KC9BQA EN63ao 40 N of Milwaukee http://www.kc9bqa.com For Frequent VHF/UHF Updates From Litvan at acegroup.cc Fri Mar 5 02:25:25 2010 From: Litvan at acegroup.cc (Len Litvan) Date: Fri Mar 5 02:25:33 2010 Subject: [WARC] VEs for Monday Evening, March 8 Message-ID: <4B906B95.1050706@acegroup.cc> For the VEs working next Monday, please plan to arrive at Bluffview about 6:45 PM. Cut a dipole for the exact frequency center that you will probably use on 15. Forget the balun, forget the choke, just put a piece of decent coax on it and Bob's your uncle! (You might have to clip it a little after you see where it centers from you calculation. Oh, and it is always easier to shorten an antenna from the center rather than from the two ends because most of us cannot get it taut enough to make that impossible anyway.) I'm currently using a "revised" Carolina Windom with the choke down 10 ft from the feed point - and balun at feedpoint. I like this antenna a lot. It wants to be about 20 to 30 ft up at the apex. The difference in resonance points with and without the choke is quite amazing. Have fun in contest...might hear you on...I had a blast in the cw portion Dick w0rif Len Litvan wrote: > So,....my G5RV JR in the garage attic is not too good on 15 meters. > Should I put up a temporary 15 meter inverted V with choke balun or > configure it as a vertical dipole with an un-un? All are welcome to our nets, we run them as friendly VHF'ers who want more activity on the bands. The breaking news is that this morning, ON4KST has created a VHF/UHF chatroom for us Americans. No more sharing the European one. News about this development is at http://kc9bqa.com/?p=2170 We'll be in there tonight, using the chat to help coordinate activity with the 144.240 net at 8pm eastern. Even if you can't reach our nets, you're more than welcome to hang out in the chat. Please note that using chat is surely not mandatory for enjoying the nets. All votes taken through the approval process were unanimous! Thanks again for making a special effort to be at the meeting, for submitting proxy designations, and for your overall interest and support. A special thanks to the team who worked on the revisions--which were extensive and structural in nature: Les K0BAD, Clare K0NY, and Ken N0JP. They put a lot of thought, effort, discussion, disagreement, negotiating, and time into the work which resulted in the adopted documents. Your work on behalf of the club is truly appreciated. Now...on to having some FUN with our radio hobby.... FOX HUNT!!!! SATURDAY MORNING, MARCH 27. After breakfast at McDonalds West. More detail to be published soon. I hope to see you all there. It is very much appreciated and very generous of you. I think the computer bag will work out well for me--replacing the briefcase with the broken frame which houses my version of the "HF station in a briefcase." The ladder line will be put to good use also. Very good use. I hope the new hams took some of the big gel cells. They can be great power supplies for an in-house operation position at minimum cost. AS YOU KNOW, DELORES USUALLY COMES TO BREAKFAST KEN -------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Lance, Les, Clare, Ken & Dick, Thanks for all your help in getting the revised constitution and by-laws adopted last night. It is very much appreciated. Now,...we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work. There will be some added effort as we work through the new documents for the first time and get operating practices established. First, let's work on setting up regular executive board meetings. I am thinking monthly--at least at the beginning. Would the first Saturday of the month after breakfast work OK? Please let me know. We are obligated to publicize to members the dates, times, and locations of executive board meetings. If the first Saturday morning flies, the first meeting would be April 3. The main item on the agenda might be committee assignments. There are a couple of other incidental items to cover also, but the main item as I see it right now is getting the committees up and running. PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THIS SUNDAY IF: 1) THE FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH FOR REGULAR MEETINGS WILL WORK FOR YOU AS A RULE, AND 2) IF APRIL 3 SPECIFICALLY WORKS FOR YOU. If the first Saturday is a particular problem, please suggest a couple other days which might work better for regular meetings. Monday evenings are OK for me. Thanks & 73, Len PS. I will be on a business trip from mid-day today 'til Monday afternoon and then leaving again early Tuesday morning and returning Friday afternoon. Will be available by e-mail. The MoU, which replaces an earlier Statement of Understanding that expired in 2007, provides a "broad framework for cooperation" between the ARRL and the ARC "in preparing for and responding to disaster relief situations at all levels in rendering assistance and service to victims of disaster, as well as other services for which cooperation may be mutually beneficial." The ARRL Board of Directors approved the signing of the MoU at its January 2010 meeting following the completion of negotiations. The Red Cross requires the completion of a criminal background check to participate in Red Cross activities and provides a process by which a volunteer may have a criminal background check performed at no cost to the volunteer. In the case of ARRL volunteers, the Red Cross has agreed to accept an alternative process: ARRL volunteers may arrange, at their own initiative and expense, to have the criminal background check performed by a state or local law enforcement agency. The Red Cross also has agreed that ARRL volunteers shall not be asked or required to consent to credit checks, mode of living investigations or investigative consumer reports in order to provide a communications function. The ARRL and the Red Cross encourage interested volunteers in their respective organizations to become members and to participate in the activities of the other organization. ARRL volunteers should be aware that if they wish to become Red Cross volunteers, they may be required to consent to additional background checks in accordance with Red Cross policy that may include credit checks, mode of living investigations or investigative consumer reports. Per the MoU, "both ARRL volunteers and ARC workers will work cooperatively at the scene of a disaster and in the disaster recovery, within the scope of their respective roles and duties as recommended." During a Red Cross Disaster Relief Operation (DRO) and depending on their training and qualifications, ARRL volunteers may perform in one or more of several roles, including Amateur Radio Liaison, Communication Equipment Operator, Communication Equipment Installation/Repair and Disaster Assessment. ARRL volunteers who are assigned roles by the Red Cross during a DRO will be provided with Red Cross credentials as required by the role, consistent with Red Cross policy. "Because of the importance of emergency communications, we are happy to be able to continue the League's long-standing relationship with the American Red Cross," said ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN. "The ARC and other served agencies give Amateur Radio operators the worthwhile missions in our communities that allow us to thank America for the privilege of being hams."
