I was one of many that had a DSY modem working in 1998 over a 120+ mile path. The modem: http://www.wa4dsy.net/rfmodem.html Some other hardware available at the time was the Gracilis Packeten. Any Linux box can have the TCP/IP stack added (if it is not there by default) with a kernel recompile. Fedora 9 has at least one ax25 driver in place.
